Akron’s East Side has long faced systemic environmental racism, with industrial pollution, redlining, and neglect disproportionately affecting its predominantly Black and low-income communities. In the early 20th century, the rise of the rubber and manufacturing industries led to heavy pollution, with factories spewing toxins into the air and waterways. Housing discrimination and redlining forced Black residents into areas near industrial zones, where environmental hazards like poor air quality, lead contamination, and proximity to hazardous waste sites became persistent problems. These neighborhoods were often overlooked for infrastructure improvements, leaving residents with inadequate access to clean water, green spaces, and proper waste management.

Despite activism and community efforts, disparities persist today. Studies have shown that Akron’s East Side experiences higher rates of asthma, lead poisoning, and other health issues linked to environmental hazards. Limited investment in environmental clean-up and green development has left these communities more vulnerable to climate change and economic decline. However, grassroots organizations and local leaders continue to advocate for environmental justice, pushing for policies that address these longstanding inequities and create healthier living conditions for all residents.

Police Contract

The Akron Police Department's (APD) labor relations are governed by a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Akron Lodge #7, representing all sworn officers except the Chief and Deputy Chiefs. The current CBA, effective from January 1, 2022, outlines terms related to wages, working conditions, grievance procedures, and other employment aspects.

As of August 2024, the Citizens' Police Oversight Board has submitted recommendations for the upcoming contract negotiations between the city and the police union. These suggestions aim to enhance accountability and community relations within the APD.

Additionally, in February 2025, Akron's City Council deliberated on a proposal to engage an external firm for a comprehensive review of the APD's use-of-force policies. Despite the proposal's rejection due to budgetary concerns, it underscores the city's commitment to evaluating and improving police practices.

The renegotiation of the police union contract presents an opportunity to address these recommendations and concerns, fostering a balance between effective law enforcement and community trust.

Leadership and Community Training
Community organizing and power development training are essential components of Akron CAN’s approach to creating lasting change. These programs are designed to equip local residents with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to effectively advocate for their communities. Through workshops and training sessions, participants learn how to identify key issues, mobilize others, and work together to influence decision-makers. Power development training also focuses on strengthening the collective voice of the community, ensuring that individuals and groups have the tools to demand resources, policies, and opportunities that will benefit everyone. By fostering leadership and building a network of passionate advocates, Akron CAN empowers residents to take charge of their own futures and drive systemic change that promotes justice, equity, and prosperity for all.
